Bio:
I live in western MA where I have lived since I moved here in 1980 to go to college at Hampshire in Amherst. I studied natural sciences, music and psychology - fascinated with everything - and played with a variety of ensembles including several bluegrass bands: "Pieces of Neck", "Lonesome Fish Quintet", "Backwoods Medicine", and "Pig and the Idiot". I was the principal violist of the Five College Symphony Orchestra and composed many works of electronic music under the tutelage of Randall McClellan. I played in David Reck's Gamelon Orchestra at Amherst College and sang in Anne Kearne's Chorus at Hampshire.
After college, I got a job at Whole Foods Market in Hadley and did some work for a local violin shop (sales). In 1986, I opened my teaching studio and offered mandolin, guitar and fiddle lessons to students of all ages. In 1989, I opened NC Booking (northampton community booking), a booking & PR agency that worked exclusively with roots bands such as Ed Vadas, Don Minott, The Klezmen and many others. In 1999, I became the sales manager at Stamell Strings in Amherst and later formed a partnership with a company that imported horse tail hair for bows from China called Pioneer Valley Luthier Supply in 2001. I met my wife Emily in 2004 and we formed Emily's Violin Company and began importing unfinished violins, five string fiddles, bows, strings, and accessories from China and South Korea to wholesale in the western world.
